You’ve all seen Honda’s latest Civic commercial. You know, the one with the Civic driving down the road to the tune of the William Tell Overture? Well, CubeDini.com has tracked this place down, and has the inside scoop for your enjoyment.
First of all, for those of you who haven’t seen the commercial, here it is.
Honda music road

Honda’s latest marketing campaign for the Civic involved a quarter mile stretch of road, filled with half-inch deep, 1-inch wide grooves set in sequences to create the sound of the William Tell Overture when a car drives over it at a certain speed. This is one of only four other musical roads in the entire world, and it’s the only one in the United States. The reason the road makes this sound is very similar to how a record player’s needle floats over a vinyl disc.
Apparently, the road was specifically engineered to create the perfect sound only when a 2008 Honda civic with special tires drives over it, driving at 55 mph. Any other combination of vehicles and tires can still create the tune, but it would be slightly out of tune. How bout that? We Civic owners had a road created with only us in mind!

Unfortunately, the geeks that came up with this radical idea failed to do enough research prior to completing this project. Originally suggested to only be audible within the confines of the car, the sounds emitted by the musical road carried for over half a mile. This naturally aggravated many citizens of Lancaster, CA. Due to its many complaints, the city of Lancaster decided to pave over the grooves in the road, taking history with it.
I tell you, I was bummed when I found out that they got rid of the road. I just bought myself a Civic, and I was looking forward to the opportunity to hit that road, and take my part in its history. Oh well…
But fear not! The Road has made a comeback! Word on the street is that they re-made the road, farther away from the whiny Lancaster citizens! Fellow Geeks, a chance to make history is still at hand!
